My Unforgotten Mate

I don't know how I got here.
I'm not supposed to be alone.
Oh where did my companion go,
leaving me adrift to wail and moan?

From that first glance you were beside me.
Inseparable soles, striding side by side.
Two halves of one perfect whole,
we would never be denied.

But cast me off you did,
No farewell or reason why.
Left to lie here prone,
pity's gaze from each passerby.

With timeless days to mock me,
I wonder at your fate.
Cry and curse you under starlight,
my unforgotten mate.

You've damned me to an eternity,
where I feel each season's sting.
Bitter cold, bitter rain, bitter heat,
pain anew from me they wring.

You can't be happy without me.
How could you - we were a pair!
Why commit mutual suicide,
savagely fill me with despair?!

But still I'd forgive you yet,
if you just take me back once more.
Because with you I had a purpose,
it's your absence I deplore.

Wait til then I surely will,
With a faith that's never slowed.
Until that sweet return dear friend,
I'm your steadfast One Shoe in the Road.
It's about a shoe people. A shoe!

For all the words I put down on "paper" each week, I'm not that bright. Oh sure, I can rhyme on a dime, jot down some ideas or anecdotes now and then and occasionally sit in judgment of other people's behavior, but I don't really know how to "do" anything. I have always admired and been amazed by anyone who can "tinker". You know the type - the guy who pulls the engine out of his car, takes it completely apart and then reassembles it with no extra parts left over. Or the builder who constructs his own house. What?! Me Fail English? That's Unpossible!

I love Ralphie Wiggum - the hapless, dimwitted boy on the long-running show, the Simpsons. It's hard not to love a kid who is mostly unaware of his surroundings, his low IQ or the fact that he is the clueless butt of classmates' jokes. And whether Ralph's finger is buried deep in his nose, his gums are bleeding or he just told his father that he " made global warming in his pants ," the viewer is always rooting for him even when they are also laughing at him. Ralphie's all-time greatest, "laugh out loud" comment came after he received his report card. Simply and convincingly, Ralph unknowingly proved his principal's point by exclaiming (click on link), " Me Fail English, That's Unpossible! " The English language, of course, is always changing. The internet in particular has given life to numerous words never heard before - wiki, tweet, google, wifi - to name only a few. The 21st century is a daunting place. The proliferation of desktops, PC's, laptops, tablets and smart phones has added to the jargon of the English language. These new twists on old and familiar words can be - to a middle-aged man like me - a bit bewildering. I was born in one age and now live in another. When I graduated from high school, my home had one telephone - it was rotary dialing device and was equipped with something we used to call a "cord". Our television offered four channels, and I had to walk over to it and turn a knob in order to change the station from ABC, CBS, NBC or PBS. Consequently, there was no channel-surfing. Tweets were made by birds and clouds were in the sky. A web was something insects were occasionally trapped in. No one "googled".
